Possum Magic Print

Ink, Calligraphy pen, Watercolour and pen on paper, 2023

The Ngwayir (Western Ringtail Possum) is a mammal unique to the southwest corner of Western Australia. If you grew up in the south-west you'll recall evenings camping, torch in hand, darting the light about the canopies of the trees to catch a glimpse of the possums with their babies clinging tightly to their mother's fur.

Here I use a calligraphy pen to give differing weight and style of line. I replicate the organic formations and patterns found in leaves and seeds to emulate a sense of cohesion and rhythm, tying together different elements of the work. The eucalyptus leaves in left hand the corner and the Golden wattle bud on the right are the preferred habitat and food of the Ringtail Possum.
